Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular aesthetic surgery procedures, both worldwide and in Belgium. For many individuals dissatisfied with the appearance of their nose, this operation offers an ideal solution to address insecurities. However, before taking the step and undergoing such a procedure, it is essential to understand how it works. In this article, we explain everything you need to know about rhinoplasty in Belgium: how it is performed, the associated risks, the cost, and more.
Rhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery, is a procedure designed to correct imperfections of the nose, such as its size or shape. For example, your surgeon may reduce a dorsal hump, lift a drooping tip, straighten a deviated septum, and so on.
There are several surgical techniques used to perform rhinoplasty. At the Brussel Surgical & Esthetic Center, we recommend surgical rhinoplasty over non-surgical options. In fact, we do not perform non-surgical rhinoplasty. In our view, medical rhinoplasty, which involves hyaluronic acid injections, does not provide long-lasting results and can compromise the success of future surgical treatment.
Rhinoplasty may be performed for either functional or aesthetic reasons. In cases where breathing difficulties result from a structural issue such as a deviated septum, the procedure is referred to as septoplasty and is reimbursed by the INAMI in Belgium.
For aesthetic rhinoplasty, patients may have various motivations, including:
Most of the time, the surgeon corrects the hump or the nasal tip. However, you may also opt to change the overall shape, size, and appearance of your nose.
The first step is the consultation. Good news, initial contact and evaluation of the nose and face can be done remotely. Photographs may also assist in this initial assessment. Following this first exchange, a treatment plan and quote are provided.
Each rhinoplasty procedure is unique. Our surgeons tailor the surgery to your individual anatomy to achieve the desired outcome. The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia as a day case, though in some situations, a short hospital stay may be necessary. The average duration of surgery is under 2 hours.
There are two main approaches in aesthetic nasal surgery: the endonasal approach and the open approach.
Endonasal (closed) rhinoplasty:
In a closed rhinoplasty, the procedure is performed entirely from within the nostrils. The surgeon makes incisions inside the nose and then reshapes or repositions the cartilage and bony structures to restore a natural contour.
The key advantage of this technique is the absence of external scarring.
Open rhinoplasty:
In open rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes small incisions beneath the columella (the base of the nose) and lifts the nasal skin to gain better visibility and precision for structural adjustments. This allows for more refined modifications or, in some cases, the addition of cartilage harvested from another part of the body.
Cartilage is typically taken from behind the ear or from a rib. After the procedure, small scars may be visible but generally fade within a few months.
At the end of the procedure, the surgeon sutures the skin and places intranasal packing. Depending on the technique used, you may also require a nasal splint or cast.
You can expect to see the initial results about one week after surgery, once the splint or cast is removed. At this stage, the eyelids and nose may still be swollen, with some bruising around the nose.
Over the following weeks and months, swelling gradually subsides. At three months, results become more apparent, and the final outcome is fully visible one year after the operation.
The primary risks of rhinoplasty are similar to those of any surgery: infection, bleeding, anesthesia-related complications, etc.
Other possible issues include nosebleeds, postoperative pain, breathing difficulties, altered sense of smell, and decreased sensation in the nasal area. These symptoms are normal in the initial healing phase and generally resolve within a few weeks. However, if they persist for several months, a follow-up consultation with your surgeon is recommended.
There are important guidelines to follow when cleaning your nose after rhinoplasty. Blowing your nose is strictly prohibited, as it may cause bleeding.
If your nose feels congested, or as advised by your physician, you may rinse it by inserting saline solution and letting it flow naturally. To do so, use a saline pipette, place it under one nostril, and gently squeeze. There is no need to bend over or lie down, remain upright. Then, gently wipe the outer part of your nose. Do not insert anything inside the nose for cleaning.
Medically indicated rhinoplasty (functional rhinoplasty or septoplasty) may be covered by INAMI and your health insurance provider. Be sure to complete the required forms prior to the procedure to confirm eligibility for reimbursement.
Aesthetic rhinoplasty, however, is not covered. It is considered elective cosmetic surgery. Depending on the type and duration of the procedure, the cost ranges from €3,500 to €4,500.
While rhinoplasty is a common procedure, it is not to be taken lightly, as it carries certain risks. Swelling and bruising may be visible for several weeks, which can impact social and professional activities. But in the months following surgery, you will be pleased to see your new appearance and the resolution of any longstanding insecurities.
