Intragastric balloon

Take control of your weight with a safe and effective method.

The intragastric balloon is a temporary, non-surgical obesity treatment involving the placement of a saline-filled balloon into the stomach. It partially fills the stomach to create a feeling of fullness. By reducing food intake and supporting lifestyle changes, it enables an average weight loss of 15 to 20 kg over 6 months. This solution is primarily recommended for patients with moderate obesity (BMI between 27 and 35) and, in certain cases, for those with morbid obesity (BMI > 40).

A non-surgical solution for safe and sustainable weight loss.

At Brussels Surgical & Esthetic Center, we offer the intragastric balloon as an innovative, non-invasive option to support your weight loss journey. Tailored to your individual needs, this approach combines effectiveness, safety, and personalized guidance to deliver lasting results and improved quality of life.

General information

What is an intragastric balloon?

An intragastric balloon is a medical device inserted into the stomach to reduce available space and trigger a sensation of early satiety. It helps patients eat smaller portions and gradually lose weight.

Why choose the intragastric balloon?

This option is ideal for individuals seeking a temporary, non-surgical method to initiate weight loss. It can improve obesity-related conditions such as diabetes or hypertension while encouraging healthier eating habits.

What are the alternatives to the intragastric balloon?

Alternatives include medically supervised diets, prescription weight-loss medications, or surgical interventions such as gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy. The appropriate method depends on each patient’s health status and goals.

Procedure details

How is the intragastric balloon inserted?

Eligibility is assessed during an initial consultation. The balloon is inserted via endoscopy under local anesthesia or mild sedation. Once in place, it is inflated with a saline solution to fill part of the stomach. The procedure is quick, typically lasting 20 to 30 minutes.

What are the possible side effects?

Patients may experience nausea, vomiting, or gastric discomfort during the first few days following insertion. These symptoms are temporary and usually manageable with prescribed medication. Heartburn or a sensation of heaviness may also occur.

What happens after the balloon is removed?

After removal, patients receive ongoing support to maintain the dietary and behavioral habits established during treatment. Nutritional follow-up is key to consolidating results and preventing weight regain.

Results and follow-up

What results can I expect?

Patients typically lose between 5 and 20 kilograms over six months. Results vary based on how closely the patient follows dietary and lifestyle recommendations. The more consistent the routine, the greater the weight loss.

Are the results long-lasting?

Results can be long-lasting if the patient maintains a balanced lifestyle post-treatment. Ongoing support from a nutritionist or health coach is often recommended to sustain the progress made.

Is follow-up necessary?

Yes, regular follow-up with medical and dietary professionals is essential to monitor progress and adjust recommendations. Follow-up care also ensures effective management of side effects and addresses any concerns.

Contraindications and precautions

Who should not receive an intragastric balloon?

This treatment is not recommended for individuals with severe hiatal hernia, serious gastrointestinal disorders, or for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. A thorough medical assessment is mandatory to ensure patient safety.

What are the risks associated with treatment?

Risks may include balloon intolerance, gastric irritation, or rarely, complications such as perforation. These risks are minimized through close medical supervision and appropriate care.

How can I maximize my results?

Following a personalized dietary program, maintaining regular physical activity, and attending follow-up appointments are essential to long-term success. These habits help ensure a smooth transition to a healthy lifestyle.

Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy, also known as upper endoscopy, is a medical procedure used to visually examine the pharynx, esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. This essential diagnostic tool helps identify the causes of various gastrointestinal disorders such as abdominal pain, acid reflux, or nausea. Performed using a camera inserted through a flexible tube, gastroscopy allows for a detailed assessment of the mucosa and, if necessary, tissue sampling for further analysis. It ensures an accurate diagnosis and a tailored treatment plan.

Health

Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy, also known as coloscopy, is the examination of the inner lining of the colon. It is a key procedure used to detect colorectal cancer. The gastroenterologist uses an endoscope, called a colonoscope, which is gently inserted via the rectum and advanced up to the small intestine. Air is also introduced to improve visibility. For optimal comfort, this examination is typically performed under deep sedation administered by an anesthesiologist, allowing for a rapid recovery and minimal side effects.
