Are you considering breast surgery to enhance your bust? Wondering how to choose the right implants, your surgeon, or the clinic? It’s completely normal to have many questions, this is a significant decision, and gathering all the necessary information is essential to make the best choice for your body. In this article, you'll find everything you need to know about breast augmentation in Brussels, so you can feel reassured and make an informed decision.

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures worldwide. It enhances the size and shape of the breasts and may be done for cosmetic or reconstructive reasons following illness or trauma. The procedure can be performed on women, men, or transgender individuals from the age of 18.

There are several breast augmentation techniques: placement of implants in front of or behind the pectoral muscle, fat transfer (lipofilling), or a combination of both. This article focuses exclusively on implant-based augmentation, the most widely performed method. For lipofilling, an in-person consultation is recommended, as this technique is not suitable for all body types.

What happens during the first consultation with the surgeon?

At your initial consultation, your surgeon will provide all the general information about the procedure. You’ll discuss the size and shape you desire, and the surgeon will explain the different techniques, day surgery protocol, pricing, follow-up care, and potential risks.

If you wish to proceed with our center, a second consultation will be scheduled with the surgeon. This appointment will confirm your implant choice, the volume, and the incision placement.

How is a breast augmentation performed in Brussels?

The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and lasts between 1 and 1.5 hours. Before surgery, the surgeon takes photos and marks the incision points.

An incision is made around each breast to allow access to the mammary gland. It may be placed:

  • in the inframammary fold, the most common and discreet location that heals well
  • around the areola, suitable if the implant is not too large and heals well
  • in the armpit, for minimal visible scarring, though this technique is more complex

The implant is then inserted either in front of or behind the pectoral muscle, and the incisions are closed.

After surgery, follow-up appointments include:

  • two weeks post-op to remove sutures
  • three months post-op to assess swelling and healing
  • one year post-op to confirm the final result

Which type of implant should you choose?

Breast implants vary in shape, filling, and shell texture. Your implant choice will always be made in consultation with your surgeon, depending on your desired outcome, current breast size, and target shape.

For a natural and subtle look, anatomical (teardrop-shaped) implants or ergonomic implants filled with soft silicone gel are recommended. The former offers a gentle contour, while the latter adjusts naturally based on your position (standing or lying down).

If your goal is to significantly enhance volume and achieve a fuller cleavage, round implants will create a harmonious shape and a well-defined neckline.

What happens after the procedure?

You may experience chest pain for a few weeks, especially when moving your arms. Your surgeon will prescribe appropriate pain relief. Swelling, bruising, and breast fullness may persist for several weeks or even months.

Recovery varies by individual and procedure. Your surgeon will provide personalized post-op instructions, which typically include:

  • wearing a compression bra to limit swelling
  • avoiding heavy lifting
  • refraining from moderate physical activity for one week and intense exercise for six weeks
  • avoiding driving for one week
  • taking at least one week off work to rest properly

Are results visible immediately?

Yes and no. Your breast size will be visibly enhanced right after surgery, but swelling will temporarily distort the appearance. Final results become visible after three months. Scars fade gradually and may continue to improve over a year. While scars will remain, they can be minimized or revised with additional treatments.

When should implants be replaced?

Breast implants are not permanent. Most patients will need to replace them one to three times in their lifetime. If desired, you can have them removed to return to your natural breast.

Implants typically last 10 to 15 years. However, complications such as capsular contracture, rupture, or leakage may require earlier revision. Regular follow-up with your surgeon is essential.
